EMMA THOMPSON TURNS TO NANNY FOR NEXT FLICK

'Nanny McPhee' written by - and starring - Emma Thompson is being touted as the next project for British director Kirk Jones ('Waking Ned Devine').

While little recognized in the States, Jones started out in the UK for directing TV commercials.

In 1998, he moved over to movies, writing and directing his only picture to date, the well-received comedy 'Waking Ned' which was released Stateside by Fox Searchlight.

Thompson has a bit of a golden touch in both writing and then starring in the same projects. The first time she wrote and starred in a theatrical motion picture was in 1995 in 'Sense and Sensibility'. She won the adapted screenplay Oscar for and was nominated for Best Actress.

In 'Nanny', she will play a governess who uses magic to alter the behavior of a gaggle of previously irredeemable kids.

Of course, this isn't the first time she's played a "Nanny". Her first role on US TV was a guest starrer in 'Cheers' when she played an insane kid's performing clown called Nanny - something or other.

More recently, Thompson also co-wrote and starred in Mike Nichols 2001 HBO TV movie 'Wit', based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning play by Margaret Edson. Thompson was nommed for Emmy Awards for both her writing and acting efforts on 'Wit'.

'Nanny' is based on the British 'Nurse Matilda' books written in the mid-'60s by Christianna Brand -- the pen name of Mary Christianna Milne Lewis, a prolific mystery novelist and herself a former governess.

"Well I'm a bit of a lefty - so yeah, I believe in the Nanny state."
