THE 'GANGS' ALL HERE IN LONDON FOR DICAPRIO

On a night colder than Bin Laden attending a Bar Mitzvah, Martin Scorsese's Gangs of New York' had its London premiere Tuesday.

About 2,000 fans stood outside the cinema and braved the sub-zero temperatures to cheer star Leonardo DiCaprio.

DiCaprio, 28, greeted well-wishers in Leicester Square for a few minutes, then told reporters: 'It was pretty intense out there. This has been the biggest crowd so far. We didn't get that in Paris or Berlin'.

DiCaprio plays an Irish immigrant who gets caught up in political corruption, underworld violence and rioting in New York City during the Civil War. Cameron Diaz and Daniel Day-Lewis also co-star.

The movie opened last month in the United States, where it has been praised by critics and performed well at the box office.

Describing the movie, DiCaprio said: 'It's a throwback to the type of film that was done in the past, those big epics, the way they used to be done. ... It's a real primal story about the test of democracy in our country'.

Ace director Scorsese, who also attended the premiere, said: 'It's a part of American history, New York history, that's never really been put on film before. It's a revelation for a lot of people seeing the movie for the first time. It's a film we've tried to do in the old epic style with real sets, not computers'.

Eccentric* star Day-Lewis denied he had any plans to retire. 'It's not so much I'm retiring. As much as I love the work, I also love to stay away from it. I've really no idea what I'm going to be doing next', he said.

*When rich successful people are also strange, odd, obsessive and generally weirdos they are always described as eccentric. Anyone else is just nuts.

this could be a hit
