EASY RYDER FIRED UP FOR 'EMBERS' AND 'CLAIRE'

Enthusiastic shopper slash Oscar nominee Winona Ryder will star opposite Sean Connery in director Milos Forman's 'Embers'. Production begins October 8 in Prague.

At the same time, Ryder is also attached to star in the title role of director Robert Altman's 'The Widow Claire', for which discussions with financiers are taking place.

'Embers' is based on Sanor Mari's Hungarian novel of the same name. It's about two men, once best friends, who meet 41 years after last seeing each other. The duo (Connery and Klaus Maria Brandauer) sit down to discuss what drove them apart -- a young woman (Ryder) who ended up marrying Connery's character but may have been having an affair with the other man.

The events of the story unfold through flashbacks. During the process, the woman records her thoughts in a diary, which the men have before them as evidence -- except they have yet to read it.

'Claire' is set against the backdrop of World War II. Ryder stars as a young widow with two children who is caught between the affections of two men -- a sweet young soldier about to go to war and the town's most sought-after playboy.

Jake Gyllenhaal and Matthew McConaughey have met with Altman about possibly starring opposite Ryder in 'Claire'.

Ryder's recent credits include the 2002 pair of 'Simone' and 'Mr. Deeds', and the 2000 thriller 'Lost Souls'.
