SAYLES TAPS HUSTON AS 'SILVER' STAR'

Acclaimed Independent Filmmaker John Sayles is hoping to hit the mother lode with his 'Silver City'.

Sayles and producer Maggie Renzi have set Danny Huston for a lead role in the indie political drama/murder mystery. They're also in talks with recent Oscar winner Chris Cooper to join Kris Kristofferson and Cheech Marin in the cast, sources said.

Cooper won 2002 Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role for 'Adaptation'.

Several other actors are expected to sign on shortly, with shooting to begin in September.

While details of the project are closely guarded, 'Silver City' describes the events leading up to a local election in a small Colorado town. Among those events is the discovery of a man's body in a lake.

Huston will segue to the project after he finishes work on Martin Scorsese's 'The Aviator' He is also due to be seen in 'Birth', opposite Nicole Kidman, and '21 Grams', opposite Sean Penn, Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro.

Cooper is currently on screen in Gary Ross' "Seabiscuit." Kristofferson previously starred in Sayles' "Limbo" and 'Lone Star'. Marin is currently in theaters with both 'Spy Kids: 3-D: Game Over'and 'Masked and Anonymous'.

Sayles latest movie, 'Casa De Los Babys', opens in September in the US.
He is also the writer on Ron Howard's upcoming epic, 'The Alamao'
