'TWO TOWERS' LORDS IT OVER ANY OTHER VID/DVD RELEASE FOR 2003

"The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers" enjoyed the best first US day of any home video release this year!

On Tuesday consumers grabbed more than 3.5 million combined VHS and DVD units. And that's not counting the same mega sales in the UK.

Day 1 gross consumer spending on sales and rentals for the New Line release was an estimated $60 million-$70 million, according to several industry sources.

Who holds the all-time Day 1 home video sales record is a matter of dispute.

Sony executives claim "Spider-Man" sold about 7 million combined DVD and VHS units to consumers and rental stores last year. "Spider-Man" is estimated to have generated more than $100 million in gross consumer spending on sales and rentals in its first day in release (Nov. 1) on home video.

But some industry observers dispute the 7-million figure, and Disney executives say "Monsters, Inc." is No. 1 with sales of more than 5 million combined VHS and DVD units to consumers during its first day in release (Sept. 17).

The previous record for first-day sales was held by Disney's "The Lion King," which sold about 4.5 million VHS units March 3, 1995, before the advent of DVD, Disney executives have said.

Meanwhile, Miramax's "Chicago" also performed on its first day on the video stage Aug. 20, selling more than 2 million combined DVD and VHS units. Industry sources believe the Oscar-winning musical generated $24 million-$26 million.
