Based
on the classic science fiction novel by Stanislaw Lem
and 1972 movie directed by Andrei Tarkovsky...
Solaris centers on a psychologist sent to investigate
unexplained behavior of key scientists on a space station
orbiting the planet Solaris. Upon arrival at the space
station he discovers that the commander of an expedition
to the planet has died mysteriously. Other strange events
soon start happening as well, such as the appearance
of old acquaintances of the crew, including some, like
the psychiatrist's wife, who are dead. |

I
remember seeing the Russian original as a callow yoof
- and being bored rigid. A pretentious rip off, of the
slightly more exciting '2001: A Space Odyssey'. Expect
a lot more sex in Soderbergh's take. The fact that sci-fi
meister James Cameron is a producer should make the
sun shine. But remember that Solaris has already been
very unofficially and very tediously remade recently
- Event Horizon anyone?? |
